1989 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet
Pretty car from 10 year ownership that's seen limited dry summer use; funky pin-stripe interior; lots to like
Supplied new by Glen Henderson Official Porsche Centre, Glasgow in September 1989 this early 944 S2 Cabriolet is finished in Gaurds Red (LM3A) with ever-so period, and retro Pin-stripe cloth interior and sits upon a set of later alloy wheels often seen on a 986 series Boxster.
Under the bonnet, we find the last evolution of the naturally aspirated engine found in the 944 series, the big 3.0 litre M44/41 in-line four-cylinder engine which develops 208bhp driving the rear wheels via five-speed manual transmission which gives lively performance, considered very potent in the day, offering a zero to sixty time of just six seconds (Coupe).
The Cabriolets were all built in association with ASC (American Sunroof Company) of Germany who had the partially built bodies transported to them by Porsche from the factory for ASC to remove the Coupe roof, enhance the structural rigidity of the cars and weld in the necessary panels to become a Cabriolet and then send them back to Porsche for paint and trim before coming back again to be finished with the Mohair soft-top. Quite the build, as a result just 5,656 were made in total over 3 years making them rather rare and desirable in today’s market.
Inside, we find the super pinstripe interior trim (990) looking in good shape bar a few areas of localised wear as pictured, electric adjustment to the driver’s seat, electric folding roof, electric mirrors, electric windows, digital clock, headlamp wash (288), automatic heating control (424),cloth door panels (526), anti-theft device (533), anti-lock brakes (593), adjustable head lights (605) and radio/CD.
The car shows just 113,970 miles which have been covered by just four former keepers and the current, our vendor who has enjoyed the car on a limited basis on dry summer days only for the last 10 years. The history file includes the V5C, service book recording 16 stamps, the last in October 2013 at 111,443 miles by ECS French & German car specialists of Malvern plus a further two historic stamps for brake fluid and coolant changes.
In addition, we find an invoice from Cotswold Porsche Specialists for a lube service dated November 2020 at 113,876 miles which included some MOT repair work and an engine TerraClean at a cost of some £1,690 plus eight old MOTs and current, valid until April 2023 recording four minor advisories for tyre wear, brake pipes and wear to the steering column UJ.
Starting promptly and running well as we moved it around for these shots the car looked well bar a couple of minor areas of localised corrosion blisters (pictured) and some age-related wear to the roof which have been taped over (pictured). Given the selection of Porsche specialists, array of parts providers and active club, these little bits should be readily rectifiable by the lucky new owner and the car enjoyed as it should be, with the roof down, enjoying the flex of the torquey big-four under that shapely, sleek bonnet.
