1934 Riley Nine Lynx Special

Restored from the chassis up in 1983; from a deceased estate; not used for about two years; wonderful opportunity

In 1982, Riley Register and VSCC member, Alan Routledge acquired the principal parts of a 1934 Riley Monaco from Colin Readey of Anglesey. Included in the deal were a rolling chassis, engine, gearbox, mudguards, bonnet, seats, lights and the fuel tank. Ten years later, out of his garage emerged the Lynx Special that you see before you.

During the ‘80s, a mountain of work was done. A new wooden frame made using Lynx patterns was ordered, again from Readey in Anglesey, although we think that he went out of business sometime during this period which held up proceedings somewhat.

The half-completed body was transported to Routledges’ native Cumbria to be finished. The panelling was completed by restorer Frank Higgins and a new windscreen made and fitted, original mudguards and bonnet refurbished and much of the mechanicals were, we believe attended to by Routledge himself.

The three files of invoices certainly suggest this - many of course from well-respected Riley specialists, Blue Diamond. The interior saw original refurbished leather front and rear seats fitted, although sadly the front squabs now seem to be missing and cannot be found.

The engine had considerable work including a rebore and new pistons, the crankshaft was reground, bearings re-metalled and oil pump re-conditioned. A new radiator core was fitted along with stone guard and gearbox bearings reconditioned.

All electrics were rewired with an additional isolator (we understand this was specifically fitted so Alan could leave his beloved car on the side of Cumbrian roads while he went on long fell walks!).

During the rebuild, a logbook was applied for and it was issued with its original number EW 8079 in 1983. By the time all the above was completed, it had its first ‘modern’ successful MOT in 1992.

Make no mistake; this Riley has been driven and used by its owner. Regularly being put through MOTs and constantly used up until 2019, shortly before Alan sadly passed away. The photograph album within the piles of paperwork show a car that has always been enjoyed, whether on Cumbrian fell walking jaunts or proudly taking his daughters to school prize giving days.

Unfortunately, the body has suffered a little over the years, but only general wear and tear (dented offside rear wing for example) and its recent time in hibernation will mean that some light re-commissioning will be the order of the day. We have not attempted to start the car since it has been on site, although can confirm the engine turns.

This is a great opportunity to purchase a sporting four-seater Riley at a sensible price and enjoy open top touring at its best.
