1958 Buick Special
Stunning car subject to a £20,000 retrim and repaint; body off restoration; rebuilt suspension and engine etc; a complete eye-full
'Dartingly low and rakishly sleek the '58 Buick Special Sedan Model 41 makes Buick headline news' boasted Buick's PR machine when the new look model was unveiled.
Accounting for 20% of 1958 Buick production, the Special cost $2,700 at launch and came with the Nailhead V8 with 364 cu in (5,965cc) and 250 of your finest American horsepower. 48,238 found new homes that year.
Weighing in at 1,870kg - not bad for a car 17'6" long and 6'5" wide, it had the performance to match its impressive looks.
This superb example was imported into the UK about six or seven years ago and given a full body-off restoration by our vendor which took 3 1/2 years. The rolling chassis, including the suspension was completely overhauled/renewed as necessary and the engine stripped and rebuilt. He added new glass all round (bar the rear window), the windscreen being chosen for its graduated tint.
Much of the brightwork was rechromed - and there is a lot of it, the only part still needing work is the nearside rear light cluster, but an excellent replacement is supplied that simply needs fitting.
The bodywork was carefully worked on to remove any rust (which was minimal) and is rock solid and comprehensively treated. The car recieved a £20,000 repaint and retrim in eye-catching green and cream, with matching ostrich-embossed leather on the inside....it is a complete eye-full.
You will have already spotted the hot-rod 'flipper' hubcaps, although a set of originals are to be included in the sale. The vendor fitted a set of new radial tyres (which look like the original crossplys) and reports that it rides and steers very nicely indeed as a consequence.
On the button and ready to cruise, this fabulous Buick is only up for grabs due to the arrival of an exciting new project which means that space is at a premium.
