1964 Meyers Manx MkII Beach Buggy
Built by East Coast buggies in 2012 with original USA Manx tub with parts from Flatlands Engineering; fruity 1,835cc twin carb engine
Wow! What an eyeful of cool factor this is.
Built in 2012 by East Coast Buggies from an original US Manx tub, adding parts from Flatlands Engineering who are very well known in the Beach Buggy circuit.
It was built up with all the options including colour coded seats, rear lights and side pods and rare removable GRP hardtop/weather defence(!), utilising a January 1964 donor VW Beetle (incidentally this Beetle was recorded as a Cat C back then). Riding on its very special, and recently refurbished Appliance Turbo Vec. Vintage wheels (as seen on the A-Team van) it looks outstanding, particularly when the sun hits the paintwork which has pronounced silver fleck in it – outstanding!
The car was driven up to us by its long term enthusiast owner from Stroud, arriving with a big grin and lots of noise – it’s a reluctant sale to fund another dream car, an air-cooled earlier 911. During his tenure, he has lavished time and money on it fitting new tyres, refurbishing the wheels, re-chroming the wheel nuts, installing a front disc brake conversion with new brake hoses throughout and refurbished rear brakes. In addition, considerable expense was gone to sourcing and installing a hotter engine, a rebuilt 1,835cc twin-carb lump with Pertronix electronic ignition driving the rear wheels via a new Kennedy clutch and Kusk lock clutch plate through the Beetle gearbox.
To help the gases escape a little quicker and more efficiently, a bespoke and frankly beautiful stainless exhaust system was added with the whole lot being properly set-up on a rolling road resulting in an impressive 85bhp. This gives exhilarating performance without sacrificing the cars natural ability to potter through the countryside or down to the beach.
Our Myers Manx obsessed vendor has spent in the region of £8,000 on improvements to this epic buggy and has included various bits collected during his ownership journey including the wooden rear view mirror, Meyers Manx book "Call to Baja" signed by the legendry Bruce Meyers himself before his untimely death in February 2021, Meyers Manx keyring sourced from the States, large 55 years of Meyers Manx celebratory plaque, VW museum build document for the donor Beetle and a few spares in a box.
In addition, within the history file, we find the current V5C, copy V5, 3 old MOT certificates and a selection of invoices for the various parts, works and upgrades carried out during the past few years.
