1995 BMW 840Ci Coupe

Just three owners from new, the current since 2000; new block and pistons under warranty less than 29k miles ago; lots of history; Tracker fitted; good, usable example of this flagship BMW model of the Nineties

One of the best-looking coupes of the modern era, the flagship BMW E31 8 Series was launched in 1990 with a 5.0 V12 but a 4.0 V8 joined the range in 1993. With 282bhp on tap, it was virtually as quick as the V12 but considerably cheaper to run, with superb build quality which still impresses today.
Supplied new by Fawdington BMW of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in March 1995, this 840 has had just three owners from new, the current lady owner acquiring it from Sandal BMW of Wetherby in April 2000 at which point it had covered 43,555 miles, the purchase invoice showing that it cost her £22,950 (although the V5C erroneously records that she got it in April 1999).
It has now done 102,520 miles with a good service history comprising 13 stamps in the book up to 87,500 miles in May 2007, 11 of them at BMW main dealers, with some supporting invoices. A few other invoices show subsequent upkeep including four-wheel alignment in August 2013 and an oil service and two new batteries in November 2017.
In November 2002 at 73,852 miles the car was treated to a new block and pistons under warranty by Scothall BMW of Leeds so the engine has effectively only done 28,700 miles. (As BMW buffs will know, the M60B40 4.0 V8 was prone to premature wear thanks to the high sulphur content of some fuels in the 1990s which could affect the Nikasil bore linings. Modern fuel has virtually no sulphur content so this is no longer an issue.)
Always kept garaged in the current 21-year ownership, the car was used regularly at first but has been used less and less frequently as time has gone by and has barely been driven at all in the last few years, hence the reason for sale.
The Orient Blue bodywork is in good condition for its age, the only real faults we noted being a couple of rust scabs on the RH edge of the sunroof and a dent in the driver’s door below the mirror, as can be seen in the photos. The grey leather interior looks in good shape and the headliner is clean and taut with none of the drooping which can affect this model. All four windows work as they should, as does the sunroof. The deep dish alloy wheels suit the car beautifully and are shod in a matching set of Pirelli P Zero tyres which look to have plenty of tread.
All the original handbooks are present in the leather wallet along with 18 old MOTs and documents for a Tracker anti-theft system which was fitted in 2000. The original tool kit is also present in the boot lid compartment. Starting promptly and running nicely as we have moved it around on site, it has an MOT until January 2022 with no advisories recorded.
These E31 8 Series BMWs are top quality cars which still turn heads wherever they go. The slender front kidney grills come straight from the M1 supercar of the Seventies and are a far cry from the vulgar front-end styling which afflicts the current generation of BMWs, the new G15 8 Series included. Only 4,728 E31 4.0 models were made in total, the vast majority in LHD. This attractive Orient Blue example, with its low mileage replacement engine, looks an absolute steal at the modest guide price suggested.
